Viridian Weapon Technologies

Minnesota Company at the Forefront of Police Transparency

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – April 19, 2021 – Viridian Weapon Technologies’ Weapon-Mounted Camera (WMC®) provides law enforcement officers with an essential tool for capturing footage of critical use-of-force events involving officers’ firearms. The WMC attaches to duty pistols and captures unobstructed video and audio as soon as the firearm is removed from its holster.

“The high-profile deaths of George Floyd and Daunte Wright have brought Minnesota into the national spotlight,” said Viridian President and CEO, Brian Hedeen. “Viridian is dedicated to rebuilding public trust here in Minneapolis and across the country by ensuring transparency, which is far too often missing in officer involved shootings. Our gun camera automatically captures footage from the end of an officer’s firearm from the moment it comes out of the holster, and this additional footage has proven to be an essential evidentiary tool for understanding use of force events.”

The Viridian WMC has been implemented by numerous departments in Minnesota, and across the country. This technology provides an unobstructed view of critical use-of-force events from the end of the firearm, addressing limitations officers can face with body cameras that are often blocked by the officers’ bodies or other obstacles in critical use of force events.

The Viridian WMC provided crucial evidence in an officer-involved shooting trial in Vernon, Texas in 2020. The jury convicted the defendant of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on a public official. The WMC provided the critical evidence in the case by showing the defendant pointing a sawed-off shotgun at Vernon Police Corporal T.J. Session during an exchange of gunfire in which both Corporal Session and the defendant were shot and wounded.

The highly advanced WMC employs a 1080p full-HD digital camera with a microphone and 500 lumen tactical light. Viridian’s proprietary INSTANT-ON® technology automatically activates the camera and microphone whenever the officer draws the firearm from its holster. Not only does this eliminate risk of failure to manually turn on the camera during a critical event, but it also keeps the officer from fumbling with cumbersome equipment.
