Nevada Sheriff’s Office Testing Viridian® FACT Duty Weapon-Mounted Camera

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – January 21, 2019 – The Nye County Sheriff’s Office in Nevada is in the process of testing the FACT Duty Weapon-Mounted Camera (WMC) from Viridian Weapon Technologies. Viridian and Nye County will hold a joint press conference on Wednesday, January 23 at 9:00 a.m. in the Venetian Ballroom Delfino 4001A located adjacent to the Sands Expo Convention Center, 201 Sands Ave, Las Vegas, NV 89169.

Nye County has 150 deputies and is taking the next step in transparency for law enforcement by actively testing the FACT Duty WMC and joins over 400 other departments around the US that have used this new technology.

The FACT Duty fits duty weapons and holsters and records automatically, providing an unobstructed view from the end of an officer’s firearm. The need for this product continues to be validated in current events throughout the United States.

“We believe in transparency and providing the best technology for our deputies,” said Sheriff Sharon Wehrly. “This Weapon-Mounted Camera system documents the facts of each encounter providing an un-biased record of the actions taken by law enforcement and the public we serve. We have some deputies who are carrying this on duty now as a test program and if the test and evaluation program is successful and financial funding is secured we will then deploy the WMCs across the agency.”

Viridian has created an important new category for law enforcement with the introduction of the FACT camera. This unique Weapon-Mounted Camera provides an unobstructed view of critical use-of-force events from the end of the firearm, addressing limitations officers can face with body cameras.

The highly advanced WMC employs a 1080p full-HD digital camera with a microphone and 500 lumen tactical light. Viridian’s proprietary INSTANT-ON® technology automatically activates the camera and microphone whenever the officer draws the firearm from their holster. Not only does this eliminate risk of failure to manually turn on the camera during a critical event, but it also keeps the officer from fumbling with cumbersome equipment.

“Nye County is a perfect fit for our WMC,” said Viridian President and CEO Brian Hedeen. “Sheriff Wehrly and her officers are on the forefront of modern policing. They have built a great rapport with their community and a lot of that is based on openness and engagement. The FACT Duty is designed to capture what really happened if there is an Officer Involved Shooting. Sheriff Wehrly’s deputies patrol a very large area with remote locations. Adding the FACT Duty WMC will add another layer of transparency to the NCSO Officer Involved Shooting or use of force incidents when they occur.”

Las Vegas Metro Also Testing WMC

The Las Vegas Metro Police Department is also testing the FACT Duty WMC right now. This large municipality is very active with officers encountering dynamic situations quite often. Initial feedback has been favorable and more news on next steps will come soon.

Easy Purchase and Implementation

FACT WMCs do not require the purchase of supplemental equipment or services and are designed exclusively to answer the needs of today’s officers. The WMC generates just a small fraction of the data to manage compared to other law enforcement recording options because it only records when the officer’s weapon is drawn.

After the purchase of the WMC, there are no maintenance fees, monthly charges or other significant expenses. This results in significantly lower comparative data management costs. The FACT Duty is a one-and-done solution for law enforcement administrators and purchasing departments.

The WMCs fit on existing standard-issue firearms and fit seamlessly in multiple duty holster platforms, making it easy for implementation by any department. The cameras feature a recording time of over three hours to handle virtually any scenario. They also incorporate secured data access and are easily rechargeable.

Body and dash cameras were not designed to capture officer-involved shootings. However, Viridian WMCs were designed specifically for this purpose.
